Montraker Quarry: Where Stone Becomes Art
Just outside the coastal town of Vrsar, hidden among pine forests and Mediterranean scrub, lies a place where stone tells stories – the Montraker Quarry. This isn’t just any quarry. Over the years, it has transformed into an open-air sculpture gallery, where artists from around the world have left their mark.
The white limestone of this quarry has long been prized for building and sculpture. But in 1991, it took on a new life when it became the site of the Montraker International School of Sculpture, turning this industrial landscape into a creative space.
Walking among sculptures
As you wander through Montraker, you’ll see sculptures carved directly into the quarry walls or standing freely among the rocks. The works range from abstract forms to figures that echo classical traditions, each one shaped from the very stone beneath your feet.
The contrast between the rough quarry walls and the smooth curves of the sculptures creates a feeling of walking through a hidden gallery, where nature and art blend seamlessly.

A quiet, creative space
Unlike traditional museums, Montraker Quarry is open to the elements. The wind, the sun, and the changing light all become part of the experience, casting shadows and highlights across the stone surfaces.
It’s a peaceful place, where you can slow down, explore at your own pace, and reflect on how landscapes can be transformed by human creativity.
