Batana House Museum: Sailing into Rovinj’s Maritime Soul

In the heart of Rovinj’s old town, just a step from the sea, lies a small museum with a big story – the Batana House Museum. Dedicated to the batana, Rovinj’s traditional flat-bottomed boat, this museum offers a glimpse into the town’s maritime heritage and the lives of its fishermen.

But the Batana House isn’t just about boats – it’s about community, craftsmanship, and the connection between people and the sea that defines Rovinj’s identity.

More than just a boat

The batana is a simple wooden vessel, designed to glide through the shallow coastal waters around Rovinj. For centuries, it’s been the lifeline of local fishermen, allowing them to bring in the day’s catch and support their families.

Inside the museum, you’ll find full-sized batanas, models, and tools used to build and maintain these boats. Photographs, songs, and stories bring the daily life of fishermen to light – their traditions, festivals, and deep respect for the sea.

A living tradition

What makes the Batana House Museum unique is that it’s a living museum. It doesn’t just preserve history – it keeps it alive. Visitors can join a ride in a batana, gliding past Rovinj’s colorful harbor at sunset, accompanied by local songs and sea breezes.

Every year, the Batana Festival brings the town together in celebration of this tradition, with processions of illuminated boats, music, and food that turn the waterfront into a lively stage.

Sailing into Rovinj’s heart

The Batana House Museum invites you to slow down, listen to the stories of the sea, and feel the rhythm of Rovinj’s maritime soul. It’s a small space, but one filled with heart.
