Exploring Učka: Where the Mountain Meets the Sea

Between the Adriatic Sea and the green hills of Istria lies Učka, a mountain that has watched over this region for centuries. Its ridge stretches from northeast to southwest, with steep slopes above the coast offering not only stunning views but also a landscape rich in diverse plant and animal life.

Nature and History

Učka Nature Park features varied terrain that changes with the seasons. The slopes are covered with beech forests, interspersed with oak, hornbeam, and black pine trees. Springtime invites locals and visitors alike to search for wild asparagus among the shrubs—a beloved tradition. In autumn, the forest floor hides treasures like porcini mushrooms, black trumpets, and truffles. Thanks to abundant rainfall, Učka is uniquely lush compared to other coastal mountains, its greenery standing out in sharp contrast to the blue Adriatic below.

The highest peak, Vojak, is the crown jewel of Učka. At 1,401 meters, it offers one of the most remarkable panoramic views in Croatia. On clear days, you can gaze out at the islands of Cres and Lošinj, the Dalmatian coastline, the rugged Velebit mountains, and even the distant Alps. At the summit, a stone tower serves as both a lookout point and a charming souvenir shop, adding a touch of history and culture to your climb.

Trails and Attractions

Učka is crisscrossed with trails that cater to all levels of hikers. The ambitious ridge trail spans 42 kilometers and is a challenge for experienced adventurers. Starting in Brgudac and ending in Plomin, the route takes you through continuous ascents and descents, dense forests, and rocky landscapes that showcase the mountain’s diversity. Along the way, you’ll pass Poklon, a historic spot where pilgrims once paused to bow to Our Lady of Trsat. The name “Poklon,” meaning “a bow,” reflects this long-standing tradition.

For those seeking a shorter adventure, the geological trail to Vela Draga is a must-visit. This valley, located near the Istrian entrance to the Učka tunnel, is a geological wonder with towering limestone cliffs that attract both climbers and geologists. The trail is easily accessible and offers a glimpse into the natural history of the region.

Life on Učka

Učka’s unique climate supports a rich array of plant and animal life.

The eastern slopes are especially known for their sweet chestnut forests, or maruni, which hold both ecological and cultural importance. These chestnuts have been a staple in local cuisine for generations and are celebrated during annual festivals in nearby villages. Birdwatchers might also spot golden eagles soaring above the ridges or hear the calls of owls echoing through the forests at dusk.

The mountain is also a haven for wildflowers, particularly in spring and summer when meadows burst into color. Endemic species, such as the Učka bellflower, remind visitors of the delicate balance that sustains this ecosystem.

An Invitation to Explore

Whether you’re an avid hiker aiming to conquer the summit, a nature lover eager to explore the plateaus of Ćićarija, or someone simply seeking peace and breathtaking views, Učka has something for everyone. Its trails offer a sense of discovery, its forests a sense of calm, and its vistas a sense of awe.

Standing on Učka’s ridges, with the Adriatic on one side and the rolling Istrian hills on the other, you’ll feel connected to both the natural beauty and the rich history of this remarkable region. Učka isn’t just a mountain; it’s a bridge between land and sea, past and present, adventure and serenity.
