Kroštule

PREPARATION TIME: 30–40 minutes

DIFFICULTY: Easy

Ingredients

  • 300 g all-purpose flour
  • 2 eggs
  • 2 tablespoons sugar
  • 1 tablespoon rakija (or rum)
  • 1 tablespoon sour cream or melted butter
  • A pinch of salt
  • Zest of 1 lemon or orange
  • Powdered sugar (for dusting)
  • Oil for frying

Preparation

  1. In a bowl, mix flour, eggs, sugar, salt, sour cream (or butter), rakija, and citrus zest. Knead until you get a soft, elastic dough.

  2. Roll out the dough thinly (about 2 mm thick) on a floured surface.

  3. Cut into strips about 10–15 cm long and 2–3 cm wide. Make a small slit in the center and pull one end through to create a twist.

  4. Heat oil in a deep pan and fry kroštule in batches until golden on both sides.

  5. Remove and drain on paper towels. Dust generously with powdered sugar once cool.
