Motovun: The Hilltop Guardian of Istria
Rising majestically above the Mirna River Valley, surrounded by vineyards, olive groves, and the forests of Istria, lies Motovun – a medieval hilltop town that captures the spirit of Istria’s heartland. With its stone walls, narrow cobbled streets, and towering views, Motovun feels like a place where time stands still, yet its energy and culture remain vibrant.
Perched at 277 meters above sea level, Motovun is visible from miles around – a crown of stone atop a green hill, drawing travelers in with promises of history, flavor, and storytelling.
Walking through the ages
Entering Motovun means passing through its ancient gates and stepping into a world that dates back to pre-Roman times. The town’s fortifications, built between the 12th and 14th centuries, still encircle the upper town, offering a circular walkway with panoramic views stretching across Istria and, on clear days, all the way to the Alps.
The main square, shaded by old chestnut trees, invites you to pause, sip local wine, and watch the world go by. Here, Gothic, Romanesque, and Renaissance architecture blend seamlessly, telling stories of Venetian rule, local craftsmen, and centuries of trade.

A place of festivals and flavors
Motovun isn’t just about stone walls and history – it’s alive with culture. Each summer, the Motovun Film Festival transforms the town into a hub of cinema, music, and conversation. Films from around the world are screened beneath the stars, in the very squares where merchants once traded.
The surrounding forests are famous for their truffles, particularly the rare white truffle. Local restaurants serve truffle-infused dishes, from homemade pasta to cheeses, making Motovun a gastronomic haven as much as a cultural landmark.
Where legends linger
Motovun is also a place of myth. The forest below is said to be home to Veli Jože, a gentle giant from Istrian folklore, whose strength and kindness are woven into local tales. Walking the stone streets and looking out over the valley, you can feel the weight of stories that have passed through this place.
A view that stays with you
Climbing to the highest point, near the Church of St. Stephen, rewards you with a breathtaking vista – terraced vineyards, the Mirna River winding its way to the sea, and layers of hills fading into the horizon. It’s a view that stays with you long after you leave.
