Dvigrad: The Forgotten Medieval Town

In the quiet hills of central Istria, about 20 kilometers from Rovinj, lie the ruins of Dvigrad – a medieval town that time has left behind. Surrounded by olive groves and forests, Dvigrad sits silently above the Lim Valley, its crumbling towers and stone walls whispering stories of a distant past.

Dvigrad was once a bustling town, home to over 300 families, its strategic location making it a key point on trade routes between Pazin and the coast. But in the 17th century, plague, wars, and economic decline emptied the streets. The town was abandoned, its buildings left to the mercy of the elements.

Today, Dvigrad stands as a monument to resilience and decay, a place where history breathes from every stone.

Walking through the ruins

As you wander through Dvigrad’s stone streets, it’s easy to imagine the life that once filled this town. You’ll pass the remains of defensive walls, gate towers, and the Church of St. Sophia, whose bell tower still stands watch over the valley.

Unlike many historic sites, Dvigrad remains untouched by heavy tourism. There are no ticket booths, no souvenir shops – just open ruins, overgrown with wildflowers, waiting to be explored. The views from the top, looking out across the Lim Valley, are worth the visit alone.

Bring sturdy shoes, as the ground is uneven, and take your time. Dvigrad is not about rushing – it’s about absorbing the atmosphere, feeling the weight of history in the stones beneath your feet.

A hidden chapter of Istria

Dvigrad offers a different kind of cultural experience. It’s raw, authentic, and quiet. There are no crowds, just the sound of the wind moving through broken walls and the occasional call of a bird overhead.

For those seeking a deeper connection to Istria’s past, Dvigrad is a hidden gem. It’s a place to reflect, explore, and imagine what once was – and what remains.
