Pićan: Echoes of Bishops and Bells
Perched on a quiet hill in central Istria, surrounded by vineyards and rolling fields, lies Pićan – a small town where time seems to stand still. Peaceful and unassuming, Pićan holds a rich history that echoes through its stone streets, churches, and ancient walls.
Though it may seem like just another hilltop village, Pićan was once the seat of a bishopric, giving it a status and importance that far outweighed its size. The bishopric of Pićan, established in the 13th century, brought culture, influence, and wealth to the town – traces of which can still be found in its buildings and landmarks.
Walking through history
Enter through the stone gate and you’ll find yourself wandering cobbled streets, lined with stone houses and shaded courtyards. The pace here is slow, the streets quiet, with only the echo of your footsteps as company.
At the heart of the town stands the Church of St. George, built on the remains of an early Christian basilica. Beside it rises Pićan’s bell tower, one of the tallest in Istria, standing at 48 meters. From the top, the panoramic view stretches across the Istrian countryside, offering a reward for those willing to climb its steps.

Legends and festivals
Pićan is also a place of legends. One local tale tells of the Pićan bell, whose sound was so powerful it could be heard all the way to Venice. Even today, the bell tolls, its sound carrying across the valleys, a reminder of the town’s former influence.
Every summer, Pićan comes alive during Legendfest, a festival dedicated to Istrian myths and folklore. Storytellers, musicians, and performers fill the streets, reviving old legends and bringing a playful energy to the otherwise quiet town.
A hidden gem in the heart of Istria
Pićan offers more than just history – it offers peace. Here, you can slow down, explore at your own pace, and feel the layers of the past beneath your feet. It’s not grand or crowded, but it’s a place where stories linger in the air.
