Istrian Carnival – A Colorful Tradition of Masks and Mischief
Every February, towns and villages across Istria come alive with costumes, parades, and music during the Istrian Carnival (Istarski karneval). Rooted in ancient pre-Christian traditions of chasing away winter and welcoming spring, the carnival is a joyful spectacle of humor, satire, and community spirit.
The most famous carnivals are held in:
-
Pazin – The “capital” of central Istria hosts vibrant parades, live music, and performances by local maškare (maskers).
-
Labin and Buzet – Known for their colorful floats, traditional music, and mock trials where “King Carnival” is symbolically judged and burned to cleanse the past year’s sins.
-
Fažana and Vodnjan – Coastal versions of the carnival often include sea-themed costumes and fishermen’s satire.
Children’s parades, costume contests, and kroštule (traditional pastries) add sweetness to the event. Locals often wear handmade costumes and masks passed down through generations.
