Archaeological Hike to Nesactium – Walk in the Footsteps of Histri
Step into the layers of Istria’s ancient past with a archaeological hike to Nesactium, the most important prehistoric and Roman archaeological site in the region. Located on a hilltop near the village of Valtura, just 10 km from Pula, this former stronghold of the Histri tribe later became a bustling Roman town.
What you can explore:
-
Massive stone walls and terraces from the Bronze and Iron Age, along with a necropolis of over 100 graves
-
Roman ruins, including the forum, thermal baths, basilicas, and temples
-
Panoramic views over the valley and Budava Bay, making this a scenic and peaceful hike
The site is surrounded by walking trails — you can start from nearby villages like Muntić or Ližnjan. For example, the Nesactium Loop trail on AllTrails is about 9 km (5.7 miles) and moderately challenging, with historical markers along the way.
Entrance to the site is free, and in summer months, guided tours are occasionally available with advance notice. There’s also a small museum building on-site with additional artifacts.
